Fathers and Sons (which also translates from theRussian as Fathers and Children) is regarded as the first great modern noveland one of the major works of 19th-century literature. Published in1862, this tale of conflict between generations was heavily criticised inRussia, leading Turgenyev to leave the country. But while the criticism abated,the enduring power of the work - its themes of family and love overridingthe nihilistic views of the two younger male protagonists - has influenced manysince it first appeared.
